Reading tarot by numbers

the smith waite tarot deck

The Pamela Colman Smith illustrations on the Smith Waite tarot decks encompass much symbolism and many elements both physical and metaphysical, from astrology and numerology to mythological deities, earth, air, fire and water elements.

One of the great ways to go deeper when doing a Tarot reading after tuning in to what the card is telling you first, using your intuition and once you’ve received the initial flow of messages through, is to understand the vibration of the number on the card or cards.

Understanding even just the basics of Numerology can help you become a better Tarot reader by giving greater insights and clarity into the energy of each card. It can also be a great guidepost for the timing of decisions and changes that are showing up in the cards.

Number vibration

Numerology, the metaphysical science of number vibration is very relevant on any card pulled as that vibration will provide an insight into the energy of the card.

For example is the number on the card associated with energy that is passive or active? Is now a time to take action or wait, trust and magnetise the outcome to you? Is there a new beginning that you need to initiate or is ending the theme of the card?

Once you know the meanings behind the number vibrations you can draw on that knowledge to enhance your readings and act as a prompt to ask spirit for more information.

As a teenager who was developing my Tarot reading skills, as well as having a mother who was a gifted numerologist, I was taught to always take into account the number energy as part of the whole with each card.

I found this exercise to be a great grounding tool which helped me realise some of the information that was also coming through to me from spirit.

For the minor arcana you can use the numbers 1 through to 9 just as they are, then reduce any double digits such as the X (10) of Pentacles to a single digit. For instance 10 = 1 + 0 which equals 1. Remembering that any number with a zero added to it amplifies the original number.

The numbers of the major arcana come with more power and impact for the same number, so although the Wheel of Fortune is also a X (10) its influence is stronger.

So the 10 of Pentacles in the minor arcana, which has magic and abundance associated is the same number as the Wheel of Fortune in the major arcana which also has magic and abundance associated. You can see clearly though how the Wheel of Fortune shows more of the metaphysical elements, with the symbols showing the strength of influence from spirit beings.
